Porto

The south bank of the Rio Douro opposite the city of Porto is Vila Nova de Gaia, an area dominated by the historic wine lodges of the numerous port manufacturers, with names like Sandeman, Cockburn, Offley, Ferreira, Porto Cruz and Dow. Most of these companies offer boat trips up the river combined with a tour of their lodge (the word is derived from the Portuguese loja, meaning warehouse). When we finished our river trip (we went with Ferreira) the wine lodge was shut for lunch so we skipped that and wandered round the old city, which is what you can see across the river.
