NEIGHBOURS

No puns today. I have nothing but respect and admiration for my neighbours, D and L. They live next door with their three grown-up children, two very young relatives whom they foster, two dogs and Milo the cat, who sometimes visits our backyard to check out the mouse situation. D and L work incredibly hard, and D has been gradually renovating his house, on his own at first and then with the children as they got older, with what little spare time he has from his other jobs, and from helping other members of their rather dependent extended family. They're not well off. They're thoughtful and unassuming and they've brought the children up to work hard as well as doing voluntary work in the community. For years the flat and gradually rotting kitchen roof was a low priority until a couple of years ago it collapsed into their kitchen. Then D and his son J, who was about 17 then, spent a few days building and tiling this fine roof.
