The Oldest Liver Bird

This is the oldest Liver Bird known to exist. Its in St Luke's and although its obviously been there a while (since the 1830s) it hasn't been on view for a considerable period of time. Certainly not since the Germans bombed it in the war.

Liverpool City Council seems to have some sort of love / hate relationship with the church. It stands, with no roof and little inside, as a memorial to the losses sustained in the Blitz, yet they don't seem to want to make any effort to preserve it.

Its current custodians, Urban Strawberry Lunch, do what they can to make the church a vibrant place but with no security of tenure, their options are limited. All the more limited when it was announced that their Arts Council funding grant of £30,000 ish per annum was to be axed from next year. Completely.

So Fab Collective decided to try and help. We had an auction of photos (and one painting). The auction raised more than £1,200 and that's before we counted the door takings and the bar profits.

Its a small part of the £30k that's missing from the budget for next year, but it was a real buzz to have been able to do a bit to help. Our thanks go out to all the people who came tonight and especially to the bidders.

If you want to know what I'm banging on about, then go here. Or, preferably, here.
