wander, stumble, wonder

City

Here's a semi-back-alley, at one of the exits of the Centrepoint carpark. I love the hidden ways of buildings that may look quite respectable from the front while sporting a colourful collection of tags and graffiti at the back.

Look at a building long enough and you'll become a spectator of its life, you'll notice the patches or the additions made long after the original architect has put down his pens. Observe from above and there are back stairwells, rusty iron and wonky, small windows and doorways peering out over miniscule courtyards. Keep watching and you'll see the life of the building. Doors will open, faces will peer through the windows. Upon one small balcony overlooking an old tin roof you'll notice some pot plants, on another a deck chair. A cluster of smokers huddle outside another, and you'll wonder how many more that rickety fire escape can hold. A flash of movement catches your eye, and you find yourself creating stories about those curtains, freshly drawn. A bird swoops past, drawing your eyes back to your own perch. And you'll slow draw back into yourself, aware that you've been standing completely still at the edge of the carpark roof, your feet are asleep, and a small child's staring at you. You shake your head and move on, shrinking back into your little space, eyes down, rapidly forgetting the little wonders of the rest of the world.

Look up more.
