The pond?

The pond in the woodland garden at Archerfield...

......is apparently not a pond!

My reference book says that a pond is a body of water which is fed by ground water and rainwater. This therefore is a lake, fed and drained by the Eel (or Eil) Burn. It would have provided fish and ice for the Big Hoose, and in its heyday had a chinese bridge and willow-pattern style pavilion on the island.

The golf course irrigation lake, on the other hand......
