What took you so long?

Mrs jml went to visit a friend this afternoon, saying that she would be away for just an hour or so. Jess waited patiently at the gate. I am sure that she could recognise the sound of our car returning - from where she was, she could not have seen it being parked on the other side of the street. But she was up and ready to greet the wanderer even before she came into sight.
