Check Mate

Day two of Doors Open weekend and we headed to Alva Street (West End Village) to check out Edinburgh Chess Club, which was established in 1822 and is the oldest surviving chess club in the UK. In 1922, they moved to the flat in Alva Street . In 1984, Anatoly Karpov, the then reigning World Champion visited, however the visit was kept secret, as he was unable to get permission from the Soviet authorities and was not meant to be there. Here's the view from the main clubroom into Alva Street.

Following that we trekked 40 minutes across town to look at Edinburgh University Old College and the Talbot Rice Gallery to find them both closed due to trying to complete their refurbishments .... mmm!

Hope everyone has had a good Sunday?
