Gorse and cobwebs

We have two types of gorse here in West Cork, the native dwarf gorse, above, which is flowering now and the European gorse which can come into flower as early as January. The flowers of the latter have the most divine smell of vanilla, the aroma can fill the air on a warm spring day. It is regarded by many as a pest to be eradicated but personally I think it's a useful plant, it coppices well, provides shelter and firewood and the flowers make a really good wine. At the moment it is home to many spiders!
