Bonneville Memories

The second PhotoCrawl was yesterday at Celebration Park, along the banks of the Snake River. About 15,000 years ago, an ice dam across the Snake River broke, sending a 600 ft tall torrent of water roaring down the Snake River channel in what's called the Bonneville Flood, tearing out everything in its path, forming the Snake River Canyon (this is the famous canyon Evel knievel tried to jump in his rocket powered motorcycle). When the waters subsided, thousands of rounded basalt boulders (called melon gravel) were left behind. In the Celebration Park area early American Indians carved petroglyphs into the lava rock. The park is the only archaeological park in the state of Idaho.

Did I also say it was hot? 100 degrees. Even so, there were about 15 participants. It was fun.
