There surely must be some people really called that somewhere near you.

I, and this has nothing to do with the blip.
am not gin drinker, in fact I only had my first taste of it the other week, when my wife didn't want o finish her G and T; but around the middle of the 19th century, if one went into your local hostelry to have a swift one on the way home from another hard day at the office, and you fancied a gin; you would have probably asked for, " A yard of silk."
Because from around 1854 until, goodness knows when, that was the common term for said imbibement.
