History on its head

A 15th century column at Lonja de la Seda (The Silk Exchange), Valencia. Reaching 17.5 meters, the columns are twisted to represent the rope of the ships that transported the silk. They then fan out as they touch the vaulted ceiling, like Mediterranean palm-trees, and transform into the ribs of the vaults, once painted with gold leaf stars.
