Calton Hill

So... the plan was to get up at the back of 6am and head up to Calton Hill to catch the sunrise then head back to watch that game. However, true to form and in recognition of my well deserved moniker, I slept through the alarm!

As it turned out, it's been a grey, cloudy but still warm (it's going to be muggy tonight) day and I just headed up after the game.

Two of The Hill's famous landmarks.

In front is Nelson's Monument, built between 1807 and 1815 to commemorate his victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. In the background is the National Monument, the city's memorial to the fallen from the Napoleonic Wars. Long known as Edinburgh's Folly, construction began in 1826 but a lack of funding lead to a halt in 1829 and the monument was never completed.
