Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The complexities of history.

This is part of a magnificent marble and bronze war memorial overlooking the sea in Syracuse, Sicily. It commemorates the soldiers killed in the 1930s in Djibouti, Somalia and Ethiopia, during Mussolini's doomed attempt to establish a New Roman Empire in Africa. The feelings against fascism still run deep, hence the horrid graffiti that covers the whole of the memorial. Isn't history so very complicated?
