An A to Z of the Doric: an occasional series. X Z

Doric, the dialect spoken in the North-East of Scotland is rich in words and phrases associated with the land and the sea. Over the next few weeks I will try to illustrate some of them in an A-Z using examples of their use taken mainly from Buchan Claik, The Saut an the Glaur o't written in 1989 by Peter Buchan and David Toulmin.

We have now arrived at the tail end of the alphabet, with Doric words beginning with X or Z.

The bad news is that, after the most diligent of searching, talking to the local chiels and listening in on the claik of the wifies, I have failed miserably to find even a single word beginning X or Y.

So, I will leave you with a photograph of the book that has been the inspiration behind this series and a scrap of paper with a few collective nouns that appeal to me. (The scrap is probably best read zoomified.)

I have much enjoyed this short trawl through the Doric, I hope that you have too. I will doubtless be posting more random illustrated words as the opportunity arises.
