Old Garage

Through the sleepy town of Kippen and passed this old-style garage. I like these; none of the modern super-clean service emporia where your car is serviced by a computer. This is the real Mccoy, greasy floor, racks of esoteric tools and very few cars left which can be serviced this way. Almost all the modern stuff is designed to be dealt with by the ubiquitous microchip.
Way back, when 4-star petrol (no unleaded) was 6/7 a gallon and Redex a penny a shot I worked weekends in a garage. The chief mechanic could tune a car engine with a large scewdriver. One end on the cylinder block, the other to his ear, he picked up on the vibrations and could adjust as required. Genius!
(For you kiddies, 6 shillings and 7 pence equals approx. 33p. You could buy 3 gallons and three shots of Redex for £1.00 exactly. )
