Salad Days

Today is the first entry in our garden blip diary. We're hoping to create a record of our work growing and eating our own stuff, as well as the general garden maintenance.

Why? So we can keep track of it...and it might be fun. I don't think it'll be a daily blip - we'll see how we get on. Well here we go.

It was the the day of second salad sowing. We're already starting to eat our first mixed leaves and rocket, so this second sowing will keep us going until the end of July.

Sowed a box of red and green leaves, chicory leaves, Sucrine Provence lettuce, rocket and odds and ends of salad packets all mixed together. These were sown in an open box full of clean compost and watered. They should appear around 8 - 10 days if sown indoors or under glass.

Also started:
rocket - broadcast in large pot
coriander - broadcast in large pot
cabbage - Flower of Spring - in individual cells
Red Lettuce from Provence - in individual cells

Leeks were also transplanted into larger pots in order to grow them on until ready for their final outdoor bed.

** Top Tip** We ask friends to bring us vegetable seeds back from their holidays. It's a great way to try new varieties that are not always available in the UK and their always cheap as chips. This year we're growing salads from Italy and France and beans from Germany.
