Little Big Orchard Road: THE BIG SALE!

by Vagabong Ink, Minus, and the NUS.

5 minutes in Singapore and I've already got the spring back in my step.

This grouping caught my eye on the way to work. I initially took it to be some sort of "teaser" advertising campaign; you know the sort of thing, the plain brown bag gets you wondering "what's that all about" and then next week the Sainsbury's logo appears on the front, or a giant Samsung Galaxy pokes out the top.

On closer inspection, this little bit of text is available by way of explanation:
"Shopping draws people, Sales draw crowds. In our culture, shopping is one of our biggest pastimes and we mapped that onto our chosen site: Dhoby Ghaut Green. The installation makes use of this mapping to highlight the commoditization of plants. Putting the trees on sale makes a comment on the monetary aspect of greenery. It is not cheap to be a green city. The investment in green is heavy and we do pay a heavy price to be a green city."

All of which is certainly thought provoking, but are the guys and girls of Vagabond Ink and Minus for or against this wanton verdancy?

I love the fact that this type of thing can spring up overnight, particularly as Vagabond Ink is best known for their tattoos.
