Aquamarine/Nanna K's Day

NW Coast art in Chicago

A very full day- we are packing too much in, of course, but will recover later. On our must see list was the Oriental Institute at the U of Chicago - it has a wonderful Egyptian collection (as well as Assyrian, Turkish and other near Eastern Art!) we heard a lot about when we were in Egypt in Jan. We were not disappointed. And while we were in that southern part of town, we toured Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House across the street on a beautiful sunny fall day. All the years we lived here, we did not do that, altho we've been to his 2 schools Taliesin east and west. (wisconsin and arizona) We get very claustrophobic in his buildings as we are tall and the ceilings are very low, and the furniture is very uncomfortable. :-)

With a few hours left in the day we went to the Field museum to see their Egyptian collection, but mainly the Northwest Coast art from our part of the world. Not as good as the museum at UBC, or The museum of Man in Ottowa, (where one can appreciate the differences in the tribes) it's very impressive as thousands of pieces were shipped here for the World's Fair of 1893. There is a movement now to repatriate many of their pieces back to the cultures who created them. So many of the Haida pieces have been returned now - it's great the museum is cooperating with the tribes. This totem is Salish (Seattle's area) - is a spirit man with 4 mink. Not sure if the Salish are looking for it to be returned.

Sort of exhausted! Having a legs up break before we go find something to eat!
