The mast on top carries the time ball. The ball is part of the time signal and at one o'clock when the gun goes off at Edinburgh Castle the ball drops to signal Greenwich Mean Time.

This is on my walk to work. But not for long. Apparently we are moving back to the old office shortly. Which means ten minutes more in bed, but not such a pretty walk in the morning.
