Lathyrus Odoratus

Many-zoned polypore

Sometimes called 'Turkey-tail' the many-zoned polypore is a common fungi and often appears on the ends of deciduous tree trunks when cut and left in piles. When it appears on the ends it forms in large overlapping tiers but when it comes through the main body of the trunk it seems to create these rosettes. Its scientific name is 'Coriolus versicolor' which reflects the fact that it is very variable in colour, often black and green, rusty-brown and yellow or blue-grey. This one was growing on a pile of silver birch logs.
