Clear circular moiety fits in the ear canal; the grey part, after snapping the battery closed, flips over the outer ear. It is very unobtrusive I wore a pair for 3 days before my wife noticed. The grey part contains stereo microphones, a microcomputer that sets the frequency response and amplification parameters for several programs and logs usage, a power amplifer that sends the signal to the ear piece and who knows what else. I'm not sure i hear better with them but i do hear more especially in the higher frequencies
