This place is pretty mental, once you get off the safe bubble that is Paradise Island, Nassau is a fascinating place. A bit wild. They've got some strange religious stuff going on. Just off the high street we saw a saltire flying on top of a church it was a presybyterian church called St Andrews!!
When we were scootering about we came across loads of strangely named churches, the only one I remember was the Church of the final hour. Apparently this dates back to the slave trade, when religion was banned for the slaves (loosely Catholic I think) as the slave ownwers and traders were worried about large groups of slaves being together at the same time and the potential for uprisings. So they worshipped secretly in small groups, after emancipation that evolved into alot of odd sounding churches.
Slavery was only banned just over a 100 years ago. When you go round the island you find a massive scottish connection, balmoral, brigadoon, McPhersons bend, Carmichael to name but a few. The (posher!) graveyards are full of Scottish sounding names. I think it would be safe to say that a few of our ancestors were up to no good over there.
The locals are strangely proud of their British roots, you might think they'd want to ditch the Colonial baggage but. Queen Victoria in particular is held in high esteem as she is associated with the abolition of slavery.
