Thistle Down

By Ethel

Dead Tree

A dead tree stood,
Where the brooklet ran.
All white and brittle,
So like an old man.

The bark was all hoary,
With the whiskers of him.
Who tottered with a cane,
And was like unto Jim.

Now...Jim lived alone,
On the brow of the hill.
And the tree stood watch,
And the brooklet ran still.

The old tree fell,
It went down on the rim.
And the old man looked,
With eyes that were dim.

So soon was the time,
When the sunset showed red.
And the old man and tree,
Were both lying dead.
