The Shop Around The Corner

Have you ever seen "You've Got Mail"? You should, you know. Tom Hanks falls in love with Meg Ryan, again. But it's also about Big Business versus Little Independents and the merits of each.

This blip shows a shop around our corner. When we moved to the area, twenty odd years ago, it was a Honda Garage. Most recently it was an Oddbins - almost too handy for that obscure single malt! That company, of course, folded and the shop was boarded up. Now, as you can see, it is being fitted out. Can you guess what its going to be? Come on, the orange gives it away. Yes, its going to be a Sainsbury Local.

Which poses me a "You've Got Mail"-like dilemma. No, Meg Ryan will not be working there or falling in love with me. And before Rebecca asks, neither will Tom Hanks! With her.

The question is, what will a Sainsbury Local do to the local independent traders? Will I be able to resist? It's so, so near.............
