Folly Good

Above is one of the 'Gwangju Follies' a recent design project that saw ten instillations made by ten different artists placed at various points around the downtown area. This one is just down the road from our house and one of my favourites.
Some feel bit more practical (one, for example, is a subway entrance) and others purely aesthaetic, and they often seem to be deliberately placed in areas that aren't that nice, such as busy intersections. I will no doubt blip a few more of them over the coming months.
The aim of the project is to improve the city's aesthetics and attract visitors. You can even walk the 2.2 kilometres that takes in all ten and collect a stamp at each, trading the stamps for a gift voucher.

Korean urban areas are often not the prettiest of places, so the follies are a welcome addition. Gwangju City Council plans to add more of them in other parts of the city, hoping to have one hundred in place by the year 2020.
