Golden Plovers

It's the time of year in which thousands of golden plovers begin to flock to the Dearne Valley. Every now and again, they have cause to take wing, for reasons known only to themselves. I can tell you though, the noise is fantastic when they all take off at once.

It is worth noting that at the extreme range of focus, that the begin to see some of the compromises of such a lens coming into play. The edges aren't quite so sharp, and there's a bit more colour fringing to correct.

Of course, 270mm is generally regarded as a pretty modest focal length for wildlife work, but when you're watching a flock like this, it gets the job done.

Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm @ 18mm; ISO 200; F/10; 10 seconds. VC off.
