iPhone - Foxcoon suicide prevention nets

I took a trip through the dusty streets Longhua, Shenzhen today an area famous because it's where the iPhone is made. They are produced by a Taiwanese company Foxconn and the Foxconn factory gained notoriety for workers jumping off its buildings. I couldn't help but notice the suicide prevention netting around every building as you can see in the blip.

As I got off the metro driving along the was a road sweeper spraying out water across the dusty highway; kind of think it was waste of time. So for 12 RMB had a KFC breakfast, in stark contrast to what was outside, in a new and rather ritzy KFC restaurant. A short taxi ride away I ended up at the gate to China's largest private employer Foxccnn.

This factory received some attention in the media last year, as reported in May 2010 "The latest casualty fell to his death from a dormitory building in a Shenzhen plant at around 11:20 pm Wednesday, the Xinhua News Agency reported. The death has been confirmed by Foxconn.

Furthermore, "It was the 10th such death and 12th such fall at the plant in Shenzhen this year (2010). Two Foxconn employees had survived their suicide attempts but sustained severe injuries.(Xinhau)"

Since then the workers have since received a pay rise and it would appear every building has had suicide prevention netting added, high fences installed on the rooftops.

Taking photos here was rather risky game so kept my camera in a black carrier bag.

On another note a friend of mine sent me a text saying one person threatened to beat him up and another gave him a death threat. He didn't seem too bothered just wondered where it was in the job description! Oh, I got sunburnt.

Have a fabulous day!
