Getting ready for the party.

Swayambhunath in Katmandu is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the country.

Reached by climbing the 365 steps up from the foot of the hill, it offers fantastic views over the Katmandu valley.

Also known as the "Monkey temple" it has resident troops of monkeys who as "messengers to the gods" are given free run of the place.

One pilgrim in front of us "foolishly" had a bottle of juice in her hand which prompted an attack from a monkey that leapt onto her back before snatching the bottle and retreating to the trees.

My grip on my camera was unwavering, even through my suppressed laughter.

When we arrived they were preparing for the full moon and were marking the Stupa with dye.
