Cyclamen cyprium

In the alpine house, (that's a greenhouse with lots of panes missing taken out to improve air flow,) Cyclamen cyprium flowers has been in flower for a while now. It's a real sweetie!

The flowers are quite small, like all the wild cyclamen, in this case about 15mm top to bottom. Sweetly scented and delicately marked, it pays to get up close and personal. I raised this one from seed which was sown in 2000, so long-lived is another positive attribute.

Native to Cyprus, where it is often found in mountain woodland, it is quite cold hardy but the leaves and flowers can be damaged by frost so in the UK it is usually grown in a cold greenhouse.
