Between fen and mountains

Fish

The fish counter has a strong appeal. Since childhood, I have had a fascination with the attractive array of different fishes. In the UK our village is a few miles from the nearest port but that does not stop the fish being taken down to London for wholesale before returning to our outlets. When challenged recently, our local Morrisons admitted that its definition of 'fresh fish' was based on the fish not being beyond its sell by date. That is scandalous. Here, I was reassured when I saw the fishmonger in the supermarket carrying a large, whole swordfish over his shoulder taking care not to stab his assistants in the face! The fish is bright eyed and fresh with no hint of that ammonia smell that accompanies fish that have been too long on the ice. These mackerel were particularly appealing.
