Ginkgo biloba

The Maidenhair tree.

Fiery autumn foliage almost glowing in the early sunshine.

The Maidenhair tree is a bit of an oddity, firstly its actually a Conifer, secondly its the only species of Conifer that has broad leaves as apposed to needle or pin like leaves.

The Ginkgo is the only member of its family and there are separate male and female trees.

The Ginkgo is regarded as a living fossil with preserved samples dating back as far back as 270 million years.

Ginkgo's can make large trees normally reaching a height of 66-115 feet, and are relatively long lived due to resistance to disease and its insect-resistant wood.
