La Sainte Catherine

A la Sainte-Catherine, tout bois prend racine is the gardeners' saying often quoted and followed here. Today's the day for planting trees, when 'all wood takes root'. A friend in the next-but-one garden to ours has promised us a hazel nut tree shoot that has sprouted from his mature tree. I missed him at the garden this morning, but I dug the hole in the ground ready for our little tree and we'll probably plant it over the weekend.

Some of the vine leaves have been blown off the vines now, but there are enough left to show clearly the different varieties in this 'sea' of vines filling the wide valley just north of the village. The rock at the left of the frame is the one visible from the other direction in my blip two years ago and from more or less the same viewpoint last month when the vines were still green. As it has always been uncultivated there are plants on it that have grown there since Roman times.
