Hairy Snail

This hairy snail is a juvenile Trochulus sericeus from Hardwick Wood, Hardwick, Cambridgeshire. T. sericeus is also abundant at Hayley Wood and is probably characteristic of ancient woodland in Cambridgeshire. When mature it will form a thickened lip at the aperture. It has 5-6 whorls, a small umbilicus and is densely hairy. There is also a slightly larger species in Britain called Trochulus hispidus which has 6-7 whorls, a wider umbilicus and less dense hairs. The other British Trochulus, striolata was featured earlier this month http://www.blipfoto.com/entry/1507245
