Learner

An early start
on an almost empty road
and the front L plate flies off
and over our heads.

I duck.

What, with that, and stalling twice,
the drive isn't going well.

It's enough to put her off.

We stop halfway
and change places.

She never wants to drive again she says.

'You will,' I say.
'You're learning. You're a learner.
We all make mistakes.'

Shite! I'd better not tell her about some of mine.

And aren't those L plates crap.
They're magnetic.
They're supposed to stay on
for the whole journey.

That's £1.25 down the drain.

Perhaps we should drive back and look for it?

'No!'
