Christmas lights

I put up the Christmas lights last night. I started to wonder, why do people put up lights for Christmas? Nowadays, the reason is to make the winter season look prettier and more colorful. But what if we didn't have trees, bells, lights, presents, or carols? What if nobody said "Merry Christmas"? What if it wasn't just an excuse to get family members gathered together? What would Christmas really mean?
