FENWICKS WINDOW - NEWCASTLE

A fellow blipper ( Shaaamie ) requested a blip of Fenwick's Christmas Window so here it is.

I took loads of photos and I must say getting a good shot was tricky - too many reflections - and too many people. Can you spot the reflections of Greggs and Burgerking which are on the opposite side of the road. Very annoying.

Fenwick's Window - what's it all about. Well it's a must see for anyone in the North East. Every Chrismastime young and old make a point of seeing Fenwick's window. Its a tradition.

Fenwicks is a department store which has a 30 foot window facing Northumberland Street in Newcastle. Every year it has a spectacular Christmas window tableau. This year is the 40th anniversary of the animated Christmas window.

Prior to 1971 the window only had static displays but since then the figures have been animated.

This year the backdrop to the window is a bookcase filled with books which represent every window display theme over the past 40 years, while characters from previous windows make a re-appearance in the front of the display. The figures include Peter Rabbit, Rupert the Bear, Gulliver, Alice in Wonderland, Sooty, Peter Pan, Father Christmas, Windy Miller, Jack and the Beanstalk and Pinocchio.

My personal favourite window was the 2006 one which featured Gulliver. There was a huge animated Gulliver tied down with ropes and his head, arms and legs moved around to try and free himself. He was surrounded by lots of cute Lilliputians. My least favourite ( and the least favourite of many others ) was the 2002 window - Christmas in Another World which featured scenes of aliens enjoying the festivities.
