Chaise Lange

In Karangahape Road is an artwork, that is designed to be sat on, lain on, and (if young enough) jumped from.

Chaise Lange' was created by Auckland Potter Peter Lange. Four years in the making 'Chaise Lange' is not just any old seat. This ceramic, wood and steel construction has the appearance of an unrolling woven flax mat delicate in appearance, yet deceptively strong. And that strength was put to the test in the unveiling ceremony, with a performance by the girls of the Calluzzi Bar and Cabaret, in front of which 'Chaise Lange' is located, proving that the seat can hold at least three drag queens at one time!

The woman walking to work this morning was so intent, she did not notice me crouching in the gutter taking this picture.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: I should clarify that the words in italic above are not mine; I copied them from a report of the unveiling which was on Friday 28 May 2010. Interested persons may also like to know that the "woven flax" in this seat is made up of about 1200 individual hand made tiles.
