Hope and youth

Statue in Llanuwchllyn of the historian and literary scholar Sir Owen Morgan Edwards, and his son Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards, the founder of Urdd Gobaith Cymru (literally the Wales League of Hope, but usually translated as the Welsh League of Youth). The Urdd is a Welsh-language youth movement with over 50,000 members, established in 1922 at a time when youth organisations devoted to peace and international friendship were being established in many countries in Europe. The annual Urdd Eisteddfod, held in a different location each year, involves youth aged 7 to 24 in a week of competition in singing, recitation, dancing, acting and musicianship and is claimed to be Europe's biggest youth arts festival. Sir Ifan's own son, Owen Edwards, was the first chief executive of S4C.

Only saw it because I stopped for petrol at an old-fashioned filling station where you stand and wait while someone fills the tank for you; or not quite fills on this occasion: ended up with fifty quid's worth instead of fifty litres on account of my Welsh being a bit shaky these days.
