Plancius

Plancius was originally built as "Hr. Ms. Tydeman", a hydrographic research ship for the Royal Dutch Navy in 1975. In 2007 she was transferred to the Oceanwide fleet, before being extensively rebuilt and relaunched as Plancius in 2009.

Petrus Plancius was a dutch 16th Century astronomer and cartographer who proposed the existence of a northern route from Europe to Asia, and whose work inspired a number of early explorations of the high arctic.
