Pictorial History of York County

This part of a tile mural at Southlake Regional Hospital. It depicts the history of York County but is now titled as Northern York Region to reflect geopolitical changes. The work is by Merton F. Chambers and is from the 1960s or 70s. The information card does not say but it seems to be from that period.

Depicted in this section are fur trading between First Nations peoples and new settlers, farming, the first stagecoach, streetcar, and train in the area - all from Toronto, Pickering College in Newmarket, the Holland-Humber portage, ice fishing on Lake Simcoe, the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837, the Sibbald Point Church, and the 1927 fire at the hospital.

More about Merton F. Chambers and his Blue Mosaic installation.

Tomorrow: Blip #500! ... and a trip to the dentist.
