Life in Newburgh on Ythan

A ghost of Christmas past

These two little birds should be on our Christmas tree but I got them to roost on an orchid whilst they had their portraits taken. They are both made from glass and both were produced in Bohemia, possibly in the same glassworks. They look almost identical but a 100 years separate them. The one perched at the top, who has lost his tail, decorated my grandfather's tree when he was a boy and dates from the 1880s. The lower one, resplendent with a spun-glass tail, I bought new, in Aberdeen, a couple of years ago. They looked good in the 19th century, so why change the design?
