Pour les francophones d'Amérique, tout a commencé le 3 juillet 1608. Lorsque Samuel de Champlain décida de s'installer à Kébec, « là où le fleuve rétrécit », il était loin de se douter qu'il marquait ainsi le début de la grande aventure française outre-Atlantique. Toutes les tentatives de colonisation s'étaient avérées, jusque-là, infructueuses.

It all started July 3, 1608, for the French-speaking people of the Americas. When Samuel de Champlain decided to settle in Kébec, ?where the river narrows,? little did he suspect that it would mark the beginning of the great transatlantic French adventure. All previous colonization attempts had failed.
