Crocus nevadensis

Not the most stunning crocus but taking a close look at the markings on the outer petals reveals a subtle beauty.

Crocus nevadensis named for the Sierra Nevada in Souther Spain where it grows, is also found in mountain meadows in Eastern Spain and North Africa. It has different leaves from almost every other crocus in that they lack the prominent white stripe and have a rounded underside ... the leaf in this picture is a stray from a neighbouring pot!

Plenty more spring crocus to come ... if I am ever at home when the sun shines.
