Holland-Amerika Lijn

Visiting a friend in Rotterdam today. Had a great time with her and her boyfriend. Among other things, we walked along the old wharf area, and saw the building of the Holland-Amerika Lijn (EN Holland-America Line). As you can read on wiki, this was the origin of the line going between the Netherlands and the USA, back in the day (founded in 1871).

FYI, if you want to know the difference between the names 'Holland' and 'the Netherlands', read here. So yes, people often say Holland, but the Netherlands is generally more correct. (I often get this question from people when abroad..). Because Rotterdam is part of Holland, in this case, it was dubbed the Holland-Amerika lijn. The founding of the company was also during politically tumultuous times (see the history of the Netherlands wiki article) , so perhaps, they preferred just Holland.
