Emperor Menelik II

Day 2 in Addis Ababa. Some gentle sightseeing. The photo is the palace of Menelik II in the Entoto Hills, just north of the city.

Menelik ruled in the 2nd half of the 19th century. His palace is quite bijou, really.

It was my first real venture out into a big sub-Sahara city. Wow. Hard to describe it all.

I also saw the church where Emperor Haile Selassie is entombed, and "Lucy" - the 3.5m year old skeleton of the first "upright" hominid.

It reminded me that this area is where homo sapiens began.
