Chapel, Nether Kellet - a memorable day

The congregational chapel in this north Lancashire village is a delightful place. It was the place of worship during the final few years for our special friend Ruby, after the death of her husband Bill.

It was a privilege to take part in the service which was a celebration of her life. There was wholehearted singing of hymns with a joyful message. Inspirational Bible passages were read. Testimony was given to her Christian faith, her zest for life, her friendship and helpfulness to many.

In times gone by, her brother, who worked in banking in London, had also been on many missionary visits to India, Iran and Iraq. He had no family and left Ruby a large amount of money which they had agreed should be used to support Christian missions. She discharged the responsibility with great zeal. For example, there are now three simple church buildings in Gambia with thriving groups of Christians where there had been none before. There are many women in India being shown the dignity and value of womanhood in the sight of scriptures through the ministry of a fine young Christian Ruby knew. There is even a fire engine in Bulgaria called Ruby, whereby hangs a tale.......

Ruby had a deep interest in the people of countries around the world, and has made an impact on lives overseas, whilst never actually travelling out of Britain herself. She and Bill always lived a simple home life, growing fruit and veg, enjoying simple camper van holidays, making many of their own clothes and furnishings. No-one would have guessed that there was money that could have been spent on themselves. And yet what riches spiritually, practically, and even financially, they gladly gifted to others.

Yes, there was sadness yesterday, but, above all there was joy. Oh death, where is your, sting - grave, where is your victory? Christ death by dying slew, He is the Victor, He is the life giver, not only for time but for eternity - for all who trust and know Him as Saviour.

Ruby was a living example of the transforming power of Christ. We celebrated her life and rejoiced in the full assurance that she is already enjoying a better place, beyond anything the eye can see, the ear can hear, or the heart can conceive in this world - for all the beauties and bounty of the earth that she enjoyed and appreciated so much.
