Abandoned church, Clophill, Bedfordshire

St Mary's Church is on the outskirts of Clophill and was abandoned in the Victorian times as there was not sufficient room for the congregation. Over the years the church has earned a reputation for being a 'black magic' church. 'The Church made it onto the British headlines in 1963, when it was alleged that Satanic rituals had gone on within the Church. Graves had been desecrated and a human skull was discovered impaled on a spike inside the Church. Human bones were also found on the ground beneath the skull and had been arranged on a makeshift altar, along with the remains of a dead cockerel. Strange crosses and symbols were also found carved on the walls. Similar incidents in 1969 and 1975 again included the scattering of bones throughout the Church yard.' Wikipedia

Today it seemed very peaceful and beautiful. We weren't officially supposed to go inside owing to dangerous masonry but we did. There were no devil worshippers in evidence but a passing birdwatcher told us there are two osprey nesting in the tower.
