An eye or a mouth or both or either?

Figures is a small town about 20kms from us, its most famous son is the Marquis of Pubol who has a museum dedicated to him in the centre of the town.

At the outskirts of Figueres as you drive from Besalu is a roundabout with a sculpture on it that gives a hint as to what lies ahead. It is grey stone with lashes or teeth surrounding an orifice. I always wonder, is it looking out for visitors or does it seek to devour the unwary traveller ?

What it does do is to provide an introduction to the unusual world of this most wonderful surrealist, painter, sculptor, poet, novelist, voyeur, architect, fantasist and unashamed self publicist. If you ever get a chance, do the rounds from Figures,to Pubol itself where his wife Gala had her castle to his Port Lligat house near Cadaqués.

As is typical of the man he insisted in 1983 that the hereditary title of Marquis bestowed on him by King Juan Carlos in 1982, be limited to a lifetimes honour only, in return he gave the King a drawing which turned out to be his last work.

The anniversary of his death is a week today, Salavador Dali died in the town of his birth on the 23 January 1989, but his legacy, that of one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century lives on in this quiet rural towm
