Richmond Half Lock

This is a classic piece of Victorian engineering constructed in 1890. It marks the current top of the tidal part of the River Thames (The Tideway)

You can see the sluices (topped in orange) that are raised as the tide drops in order to keep some water in the river between Richmond and Teddington and keep the river navigable.

The real end to the tidal river is actually at Teddington (There is even a tiny pub called the tides end!)
