The Pot Luck Club

Tonight was the "Cultural Heritage Festival and Potluck" at my daughter's school. She wanted her grandmother to make nian gao, a Chinese dish, but not wanting to put my mother-in-law out, I said, "What about something from my 'cultural heritage'?" which is a fairly common American mixture of English, German, and Scottish. "Nope. Too boring," she replied without even looking up from whatever she was doing.

Luckily for everyone, my mother-in-law was more than happy to make up a batch of nian gao for the festival, and I was glad to be off the hook. I had no idea how I was going to come up with bangers-n-mash, or sauerbraten, or a haggis on such short notice.
